Witches appear in the myths and folktales of many cultures. Stories about wicked witches have been told for hundreds of years.  They appear to originate from the belief that those who long ago used plants to cure illness had strange powers or practiced withcraft. And while the stories mostly described witches as old, ugly women, modern stories have softened their look. This does not hold true, however, in the Wizard of Oz written by Lyman Frank Baum.

Ironically, Salem is now a popular destination point on Halloween, and boasts a number of events as part of its Halloween celebrations.

The history of witchcraft, however, predates the Salem trials by several centuries. From references in the Old Testatament to witch trials throughout Europe, witches and allegations of witchcraft have permeated most all societies.
